Got a new surfcasting rod one christmas, about the same time sister-in-law bought a section on Kawau island. We took the new rod with us when we went to look at the section. Carted the rod all day, all over the island. Finally we were back at Mansion house and had an hour to wait for the ferry and still hadn't used it. I decided to try it out at the end of the rocks while waiting for the ferry. After not getting any bites after about 20 minutes, I decided to pull it in and head back to the ferry wharf. Imagine my surprise: there was a nice big snapper sitting quietly on the end of the line.

id love another opportunity to 'go fishing' in style!! Last time my partner only caught moray eels whilst i stood behind foolishly dodging them as he threw them over his shoulder and they quickly disspeared. I soon found out when i went to rinse my fingers in a rock pool that it was a very stupid thing to do. No sooner had i dangled my finger in the rock pool , i had impulsively pull it back out in the speed of light when an eel had leviated from the rock pool to grab it!! Lesson for rock pool moochers at low tide. Look Out!!

The easy catch that got away.
About 12 years ago we had gone on holiday to the Bay of Islands. We took our four golden retrievers for a walk along the beach and half way along we came across a john dorey flapping around in some kelp on the shoreline. The fish had exhausted itself trying to get free of the kelp so it was easy pickings and we were looking foward to a lovely fish dinner that night. And we would have enjoyed that if one of dogs hadn't taken the fish off the kitchen bench at the motel later in the afternoon. In all fairness to the dog - he at least shared the prize with his mother and two sisters!!!
Saturday or Sunday would be good - thanks

When we were kids we used to go to
Whangaruru (upper North Island) for camping right by the water. My then 8/9 yr old brother came back to camp one day with a John Dory and told my mum he caught it. When mum turned the fish on the other side it was half eaten! Yep, bro had caught it all right, lying on the sand! Easy pickings!
    Mon please :)

Went to Fiji for my friend's wedding, and while I was there, the family took me out fishing in their boat. First time I'd ever been, and do you know what I did actually hook - a boot!!!

My ten year old and myself and hubby was going for a fish in the river, hubby decided he was going to walk up the river, muttering about the big fish he was going to bring home for dinner, me and daughter just sat there with rod in river, next minute i had a bite, looked around for net and ohhh no daddy had taken it with him, i told ten year old daughter she would have to wait till i got it to the bank and flick it in, she did that not a problem whoohoo a big brown trout, now who was going to kill it (not me) i said, (not me) she said, well we had to agree to hit it together, i still dont know if we killed it right, but who brought the dinner home that night (not hubby thats for sure) Mmmmm it was delicious too

I'd never been fishing before but always keen to give something a go, at least once!

I joined others in the boat, all seasoned fisherfolk. I was given a rod (they probably cast it for me from memory) and said 'wait for a bite' explaining I would get a tug on my line if the fish took the bait.

Sounded easy enough...so I sat and sat...and then quitely said I think I've got a bite. They rushed to where I was sitting and sure enough I had a bite alright. Reel it in they said...don't let it get away!!

It was quiet on the way home, a few bemused faces! Not only had this young teenage girl caught her first fish that day, it was also the only catch of the day. A yellow tail I think they called it...

    Saturday please :)

    Sat please.
Whilst out in the Tiri channel a couple of wks ago, the weather had picked up when the hubby decided to drop his bait one more go. As he was reeling in his bait was picked up and his line started to scream off the reel. He shouted for me to get in the drivers seat of the boat and drive towards the line. After a 20 min fight a 15kg kingfish was lying on the floor of the boat. Not bad concidering it was on a soft bait set up which had 6kg line and a $45.00 reel.

We were out fishing in the Hauraki gulf and I decided to have a swim as it was a nice windless sunny day. Suddenly a shark came alond and bit my foot off. My parents were quick to pull me out of the water and rush me ashore to Auckland hospital. Meanwhile another fisherman had caught the shark having heard of my predicament, opened it up and rushed my foot to hospital where it was successfully re-attached.

My two uncles bought a small fishing boat together and on their first trip out they went to a popular fishing spot, crowded with other hopefuls. A short time after anchoring and and putting out their rods Uncle 1 noticed water around his ankles - uncle 2 (15 yrs exp. in Navy) forgot to put bung in...so uncle 1 gets down to his gruts and with bung in hand is lowered headfirst over the side with uncle 2 holding onto his ankles. The other fishing boats and looking on with interest. Two minutes later the bung is in and uncle 1 is thrashing around under water trying to attract uncle 2's attention to pull him up again. Uncle 2 is holding onto uncle 1's ankles trying to look casual...eventually realises and hauls uncle 1 up, who is now half drowned and not happy. Everybody pretends not to have noticed anything out the ordinary and carrys on fishing...

I was out fishing one day, within the first hour I caught 2 snapper when my phone rang. It was a doctor notifying me that my wife had been in a terrible accident. I told the doctor that id be there soon. I decided to get a couple more casts in and ended up fishing the whole morning, with a string of catches like never before, 3 more snapper over 10 pounds. I was ecstatic then I remembered my wife! Feeling terribly guilty, I dashed to the hospital. I found the doctor in the corridor and asked about my wife. The doctor shouted at me, while you were out fishing and enjoying yourself your poor wife has been in the hospital! I hope you enjoyed yourself, because it will be your last fishing trip ever! For the rest of her life your wife will be paralyzed and shall require around the clock care, and you'll be her caregiver forever! I felt so horrible at what I had done that and I broke down and sobbed. Then the doctor chuckled and said, 'I'm just messin' with you. She's dead. What'd you catch?

I went fishing in a little creek in France when I was 7 or 8 armed with half a plastic bottle and scooped up my first catch!! Proudest moment ever until it plopped back into the water!

Does snorkling count?... I came THIS close to short tailed sting ray off Goat island last week. Apparently they are rare, so I felt lucky to see it! Man this 10 year red snappers are curious...and HUGE!!

    Monday?? :D

Once salmon fishing in Scotland I cast down stream and a salmon took my fly, shook its head and spat the fly out. I recast and for once didn't screw the cast up. The fly landed exactly where I wanted, just in front of where the salmon had been. The salmon grabbed the fly again and was on and raced down stream. I fought the salmon for a minute then "bang" it was gone. I reeled in and the fly was all chewed up. I still wear that fly on my "lucky fishing hat" because casting back onto that salmon was such a buzz and although the fish got away it made my day. The fly reminds me that fishing is not about catching it's about having fun. Tickets for Sunday please.

I was fishing off the rocks with a friend, was a pretty good day, as the fish were biting quite frequently & we had caught a few decent sized ones throughout the day. My friend landed this primo bite, it was a big one!! He played around with it for a while, let it run a bit, to wear it out, then started to reel it in, almost got it up & out of the water when all of a sudden the fish got it’s second wind & then out of nowhere decided it wasn’t it’s time to be a fish dinner & gave the line a big almighty unexpected tug which pulled my mates fishing rod out of his hands & swam away with it!! Was hilarious to watch (though not for my mate), but made for a great fishing story.

My only fishing experience that I can recall is when I was 14 camping with family and friends at Kaiteri. Late one night I headed down to the creek with the boys to try and catch an eel. They had tied some kind of pronge to a long stick, which was used as a spear. We keep gabbing it into the water, again and again until finally we caught ourselves the biggest eel I've ever seen... now comes the gross part. To get the spear out of the eel, they had to stand on the eel while someone pulled the spear away - the sound of the eels gutts being crushed was so disgusting, i decided to end my night there. The next day we walked past the same spot and the remains of the eel had been eaten away by the birds and stunk so bad in the heat of the sun - never again!! True story. Saturday Tickets Please.

My mum's ex-boyfriend who was a pom went fishing for the first time with my evil uncles who decided to trick him and they secretly pulled his line from the water and tied a big frozen fish to it. When he pulled it out he was so excited he got my mum to take heaps of photos and he went home to proudly boast on what a master on the water he was to all his friends. My mum told him 3 days later what they did!

I decided to give fishing a go and went for the first time with my dad. we tried fishing off the rocks at campbells bay.. waited..waited..waited..imagining the tugs in the road would be a fish.. must have waited for 5 hours and not a single fish was caught :-(
i havent been fishing since, but maybe going to the seafood festival in the auckland harbour will reignite my desire to try fishing again :-)

Thought I'd caught one heck of a fish in the Tauranga Harbour but then I realised the bloke on the boat across from me was struggling too. Turns out we'd both caught the same shark which was giving us a run for our money.

My fishing story is not tall at all. We only ever caught spotties but boy oh boy, our cat Sylvie was so impressed! Straight down the hatch, no gutting or filleting needed! Sunday please.

I had a bunch of townie cousins visiting so I took them our for a walk on the farm around the creek. I tried to point out to them a trout that I could see swimming in the creek but, being townies, their eyes couldn't pick it up. So I threw a rock near the fish to make it move and be more visible. Lo and behold, I hit the fish and it floated to the surface. I waded in and picked it up. The townies were very impressed - A true story. Saturday tickets please.
