A 'new’ 1930s musical . . .
Trans-Atlantic is set at the height of the 'golden age’ of ocean liners. It was a time when travel between the United States and Britain was in high demand and the most accessible way to make the trip was by sea.
Competition was high and companies built ever larger, faster and more advanced ships, with much emphasis on comfort, to attract the traveller. The rise of airlines in the 1960s spelt the end of sea travel other than as sheer luxury. Trans-Atlantic is a nostalgic look at the pre-jet age, capturing the glamour and adventure of a five-day journey, which promised romance and new horizons.
Devised by Alison Hodge and Michael Vinten, the story is told through familiar and less familiar songs of the era - 'What do you think about men?’, 'The Trouble with Women’, and 'The Passenger’s always Right!’ - to name but a few of the 40 songs in the show.
There are songs from both sides of the Atlantic by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Rodgers and Hart, Kurt Weill, Lerner and Lowe, Fats Waller and Hoagy Carmichael - all of them accompanied by a fine Palm Court Orchestra.
All aboard!
