Set in the dark hills of Wellingtons Aro Valley, Once Upon a Time in Aro Valley is a black comedy written and directed by Tza Drake.
The play centers around Dennis and Gene, life long friends who find themselves in the distasteful position of dealing with the problem of should we call the police, or should we get rid of the body.
Throughout the play the men tackle many issues, some pertaining to their dilemma. Why not call the police? What waitresses shouldn’t wear, Mick Jagger, and what does a galactic ectoplasm shine like, are all on the agenda, but all conversations lead back to the same question.
What are we going to do with Liz?
The play is set amongst a mire or moral complexity and flexibility. The limits of friendship are tested, weaknesses are exposed, truths are sought, and a bloody outcome seems to be the only conclusion.
Not for the faint of heart Once Upon a Time in Aro Valley asks questions that tend to go unasked. Another taboo in the adage of don’t talk about politics, religion, sex, and dismembering girlfriends.
