Street art comes inside in this collaborative show, presented in co-operation with the Goethe-Institut and supported by ZM.

Some see street art as a way of reclaiming public space, to others it’s reckless vandalism. Either way street art offers a communication platform in an urban landscape otherwise dominated by the symbols of media and advertising. Emerging from the graffiti movement in Europe and the USA at the end of the ‘80s, street art has gained profile since UK artist Banksy recently sold work for £1m.

Common Ground explores street art in two countries in a collaboration between German art collective/design studio Via Grafik and NZ street art crew Cut Collective. The artists walk the line between art/vandalism, creation/disruption and they share a common belief that “if the wall is kept grey, the mind will follow.”

Common Ground is supported by Board Art 08, a collection of 40 skate board designs toured by CoCA, and a full series of public programmes including a deck design workshop, public mural project, Sunday Scratch Sessions and a Hit The Wall graphics competition.
