Dame Malvina Major
Dame Malvina’s international opera career has included twenty eight major Operatic roles, extensive Oratorio and Concert repertoire and discography of commercial recordings.

With an international career spanning all continents, in 2006 Dame Malvina accepted an invitation from the Marinsky Academy in St Petersburg to be one of a panel of judges to the Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition. Most recently in August 2008, performed in St James, Piccadilly with Haley Westenra, Will Martin and the touring Boy's and Men’s Choir of Christchurch Cathedral, New Zealand , Music Director, Brian Law.

Outdoor concerts have become a feature of the summer season in New Zealand, and Dame Malvina has performed with Brian Law, conducting, in Concerts held throughout the country.

Dame Malvina has chosen to live in New Zealand, while maintaining an active international singing career. Her services to opera and the community were acknowledged in 1991 when she was invested New Year Honours the title, Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. (PCNZM.The highest rank in the New Zealand Order of Merit). In 1992 she was named New Zealand Entertainer of the Year.

Kiri Te Kanawa
Kiri Te Kanawa was born in New Zealand with European and Maori heritage.

By the time she was twenty she had won the major vocal prizes available in the South Pacific, and had also started her recording career - unusual for a prima donna in any era. After moving to London and studying at the London Opera Centre. After first appearing as Carmen in Britain and New Zealand, the young Te Kanawa was marked for Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, first at Sante Fe then at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1971.

After her sensational debut in Figaro Kiri Te Kanawa gained legendary status almost overnight and moved rapidly into the front rank of international opera. She became one of the most famous sopranos in the world, a familiar figure in the leading opera houses of the world - Covent Garden, the Metropolitan, the Chicago Lyric Opera, Paris Opera, Sydney Opera House, the Vienna State, La Scala, San Francisco, Munich and Cologne.

One of our most successful and recognised international performers is the opera singer Kiri Te Kanawa. Her fame mostly came from performing music that is not New Zealand made, but she also gained international exposure for traditional and contemporary Maori songs through recordings such as ‘Pokarekare ana’.

We are privileged to have the presence of Dame Malvina and Dame Kiri performing under the stars together at Black Barn Amphitheatre for only the second time ever.

This performance promises to be one of the special occasions this summer that simply shouldn’t be missed.

Join us for a limited VIP pre-concert dinner in Black Barn Bistro, with dessert in the heart of the vineyard at the Growers Market at interval. Includes wine with dinner.

An area will be set aside for dinner guests at the Amphitheatre.

- VIP Concert and Dinner Package $200 each (menu to follow shortly).

This concert is a once in a life time experience with limited tickets be in quick.

I have to go with Kiri cause she's one of our locals...her marae is just down the road...and you should always support one of your own. The voice speaks for itself!

You cannot possibly separate these two in terms of whose better, more talented or popular. They have their own attributes in their own right. Would be happy to see one in concert let alone both.

Dame Malvina is mostly famous for once in her youth to conquer Dame Kiri in a singing contest. Dame Kiri is successful in the pretentious world of opera, and believes she is better than others and entitled to queen-like treatment.

Both very accomplished performers and singers, but if I had to choose I'd say Dame Malvina as I think she has more character and strength to her voice. Not as high profile, but stunning talent.

I know this competition is to state your favourite between Dame Kiri and Dame Malvina. I personally can't choose as they are both amazing singers and people. Both have sung their way into the hearts of New Zealanders, no matter whether they have stayed in New Zealand or lived elsewhere. New Zealand has many creative, intelligent, brilliant people in the arts, these two singers of two of our best!

Dame Malvina Major has always had a more rounded voice, even though she didn't become as famous as Kiri, her personal circumstances were a lot different. Dame Malvina is a very distant cousin of mine, and she has served Waikato Uni (where I attended uni) so well with the school of music there. I and I would love to go and hear her sing along with Kiri. This concert sounds a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I remember seeing Kiri in a concert many years ago before she left for England. It was my first ever "classical" concert (I was about 10 years old) and I absolutely loved it. It truly opened my eyes to a whole new world of music. And the items were not really "Opera" - mainly more accessible songs. Then, I would have to rate her sound track songs in "Room with a View" as some of the most exquisite songs I have heard. So, although I have the greatest respect for Dame Malvina (and I have been lucky enough to hear her singing years ago in the Church choir of my mother's Church in New Plymouth at midnight mass), particularly for her work with young singers in New Zealand, I would rate Kiri as my favourite. I feel she brings a special quality to all her work and is instantly recognisable. To hear them both together will be the absolute highlight of my summer.

So hard to choose. Dame Malvina has always been more accessible, singing as soloist with local choirs and helping young NZ singers at home. Dame Kiri has surrounded herself in a little more mystique, even thoug she returns to NZ often. She is a wonderful mentor to our young NZ singers overseas. To have them on the platform together is just wonderful and will bring out the best in both. No, I'm not going to choose one above the other, even though it means I'm probably not eligible for the prize.

i'd have to say Dame Kiri too. I too saw her in Upper Hutt many years ago with the family and we caught a train to the concert and had a picnic there and needed an umbrella for the rain too. But it was a great adventure and I just love her singing Opera songs in other languages - maybe french/italian. i don't always know what lnaguage sometimes but I recognise them as well known songs and it is the emotion they emit and the heavenly sounds that clearly come across. She has great diction and I am sure I watched a programme once about her recording Maori songs and enjoyed all the effort involved in the process from wo to go! The costumes are great and I know from being a bit of a singer myself the amount of practice and focus that goes into each performance and the breathing effort required.

Dame Kiri ....but there's an unfair thing
It's only because I've heard her sing
Dame Malvina's voice I can only test
If you send me tickets to this opera- fest!!

I prefer Dame Malvina Major as she has remained loyal to New Zealand and New Zealanders. But I love both of their voices and would love to see the two of them singing together live.

I prefer Dame Malvina - she is more pleasing to listen to and also more pleasing to New Zealanders as she has not shunned them.

    Two "Great Dames".
If I had to choose one, it would be the golden mature voice of -Dame Malvina, who chose to live in New Zealand and share her singing talent and musical expertise with so many young New Zealanders, helping them on the path to success, while still maintaining her international career.

Dame Malvina, because I loved the way she sang the national anthem with such pride when the All Blacks played the British Lions back in 2005. Also, she's a counties lass, and her son played rugby for Counties (before it became Counties-Manukau) and I'm a Counties girl, so I'm biased. She has had a brilliant career, maybe not as public as Dame Kiri's but she has sung in the most famous of Opera Houses all over the world.

Dame Kiri has a presense about her which she brings to every role she takes. She comes across as the ultimate professional in the world of opera - I have hear both sing but my favourite would be Dame Malvina as she is a local hamiltonia - my home town but more importantly she is so approachable and will sing with beauty and grace at every occasion.

I love them both dearly - and am proud of both equally as much for the very fact they represent all that is NZ.
My pick would have to be Malvina though, as I have a soft spot for cows & I believe she practiced by singing to the cows as she did the milking - yes, proud to be kiwi :)
