It has been another big year for New Zealand sport —the Westpac Halberg Awards dinner next year is going to be another fantastic occasion.

We would like to invite you to secure your place at the 2008 Westpac Halberg Awards in Auckland next February. It will be a night to remember, and one you won’t want to miss.

After the 2006 dinner, which attracted a capacity crowd of 900 plus—with many corporates and individuals on the waiting list, we have decided to move to a larger venue. So make a note of this date NOW—Tuesday February 3 2009, at the Vector Arena in Auckland.

The Westpac Halberg Awards dinner is widely regarded as New Zealand’s premier sporting showcase—a night when we get the chance to gather and salute the country’s outstanding sporting achievers of the previous 12 months. This year we’ve had the Beijing Olympics where we won three gold medals— Tom Ashley in the boardsailing, Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindell in the women’s double sculls and Valerie Vili in the women’s shot.

There were also outstanding results for Hayden Roulston who took the silver medal in the 4000m men’s individual pursuit for cycling. The men’s team pursuiters outraced Australia for third place, Mahe Drysdale won bronze in the single sculls race, Bevan Docherty climbed the medal podium for the second time in successive Olympics after his courageous bronze medal effort in the men’s triathlon, Nathan Twaddle and George Bridgewater in the mens pair also won bronze and Nick Willis won New Zealand’s first Olympic track medal in 32 years, and what’s more, he did it in the 1500m.

There have also been some outstanding achievements at the Paralympics in Beijing. With Christchurch swimmer Sophie Pascoe winning three golds and a silver in the pool. Wellington cyclist Paula Tesoriero won the gold medal at the 500m time trial and also won bronze in the individual pursuit.

Danny Lee reinforced his ranking as the world's No 1 amateur golfer when he cruised to victory at the US Amateur Championship and the Western Amateur championship. Then there is Scott Dixon who won the Indy Racing League championship. So there will be some tough decisions facing the Halberg Voting Academy. All will be revealed at the glittering black-tie dinner in Auckland on 3 February.
