‘Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno’

Does anyone get better live concert reviews than David Byrne? Seriously. If there is a more uplifting, stimulating, innovative, memorable or just plain joyous concert than David Byrne’s, we’d like to hear about it.

And so it is with great pleasure that Andrew McManus Presents announces the return to New Zealand of the wonderful David Byrne in February 2009 to perform his extraordinary new concert Songs Of David Byrne And Brian Eno.

Byrne’s new album Everything That Happens Happens Today, set for release worldwide on November 25, is his first collaboration with long-time friend Brian Eno in 25 years. It continues the association began when Eno produced three classic Talking Heads albums and the ground-breaking solo record My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts (1981).

The partnership, which has produced much of Byrne’s best work, has inspired the current touring show. Whilst Eno may be absent physically, he is more than present spiritually as Byrne covers classic and current Byrne/Eno material in a concert which, although only four weeks old, has been lauded by U.S reviewers and may well be Byrne’s most acclaimed ever!

With a ten-piece band - five musicians, three backing singers and three dancers - all dressed in white, Byrne has raised the bar yet again in the marriage of music, art and theatre.

It’s not surprising that Byrne has once again created something very special. Since the beginning with his band Talking Heads, he has always pushed the envelope, taking popular music into new directions, both in terms of sound, lyrics and visual presentation. Outside of music, he remains a prolific artist, photographer and film-maker.

In Songs Of David Byrne and Brian Eno, Byrne performs songs from their numerous collaborations including the new album, the three Talking Heads albums and My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. The show has just commenced a six-month world tour in the US and is absolutely not to be missed.

Tickets on sale Wednesday 3 December.

Same as it ever was, hmmmm. 27 years ago when I was dear sweet wee thing (same as it ever was) my idols Talking Heads were coming to NZ for a tour, OMG YAY. I got tickets for the Wgtn concert. BUT, was same date as my 7th form camp (heavy sigh). My parents said I had to go to the camp (same as it ever was), I said no (same as it ever was), long story short - I went to the camp (same as it ever was), BUT on camp I misbehaved (same as it ever was - no details needed) and they threatened to send me home (fine - but I'd already sold my tickets!!!!). I got sent home (same as it ever was) and missed out on both - aaaarrrggh..........and was grounded for being sent home!!!! (same as it ever was). So this is my chance to recapture the excitement (same as it ever was) of going to see David Byrne live OMG YAY!!!!!

What is the same as it ever was? 1967 Whakatane A&P Show. That memory that returns everytime I catch the smell of watermelon. I feel the crowds and the cold slice touching both sides of my face, juice dripping down my chin.
Oh I wish all pleasant memories could be as vivid.

As the eldest of 3 sisters I find that I have only to talk to one of my sisters for a few minutes before we can revert back to our age old relationship of teasing, bickering, joking, laughing, argueing that we have always had. It's my sisters that are my constant as life changes. They know the best and the worse of you and will always know how to push your buttons better than anyone else.

"Same as it ever was", one of Talking Heads most famous lyrics from their hit Once In A Lifetime describes the failure of people who let their dreams as a youth get clouded and lost, like the water that flows in a river ultimately ending up on the bottom of the ocean, and the consequence of accepting such an apathetic and a rather mediocre way of life...that being the burden of a wasted life. So get up and do something today! :-)

That place inside our minds that regardless of how many years our physical body has aged is still fresh ,young, innocent ,pure,in the moment ...My father Kai took me at age 13 to the movie Stop making sense at the civic theatre in 1985 just a short time before he was killed in a car accident. The event is always with me as my last time with him alone .It was a kind of rite of passage night out for me with him and a farewell gift to me even though neither of us had any idea it was to be the last.David Byrne has always amazed me and because of the syncronicity of the event and that both my father and myself are musicians/songwriters i feel a strong connection with this music/performance/art form.If a ticket comes to me i will be very grateful.if not i will be grateful that i felt the inclination to write this .(I WONDER IF ANY ONE WILL read this and appreciate it) I know this is so long and it is late and i am not the sort of person who usually does this.www.isound.com/dylan_wade. thanks

A Greek philosopher said you can't jump into the same river twice, because the constant flow of its water makes it a different river each time you jump in - yet it's still a river. Like the river, like life itself, David Byrne's genius is the same as it ever was, yet always diffeent.

Same As It Ever Was - Is Being Back In The 80's but just little bit older.
As the 80's seem like they have never left us.
We have 80's tv shows & movies returning, movies have been made about the 80's along with remakes of tv shows/movies from that decade.
80's songs played on the radio & all the great 80's performers making a come back.
Not to forget that the 80's clothes & fashion are back also.
So what more could we ask for as the 80's were voted the BEST decade to have lived as a teen.
It was a really "LIKE YOU KNOW.......TOTALLY" GROUSE era!
And I was so glad to be apart of it.

The same as it ever was ....
The older generation parents and teachers complaining about the younger .... and to prove it here is a quote from Plato:
"The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt forauthority, they show disrespect to their elders.... They no longer
rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents,
chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their
legs, and are tyrants over their teachers."

    Same as it ever was?

i remember seeing Talking Heads in Chch way back in about 1984 as part of a "Sweetwaters South" day which included JoBoxers, Simple Minds, The Pretenders... it was the very last gig of talking heads' 3-month Stop Making Sense tour and there was a party onstage. The gig started with David Byrne coming out onto an empty stage with big shoulders and a ghetto blaster... he played "psycho killer" ... then Tina wanders out for "heaven" (which is where I was at the time) then they build up and up and up (anyone who saw the movie will know how it goes)...

Should it be Same as it ever was? Probably not if you're Karen Hay - the whole country squirmed on her behalf as the monosyllabic Byrne didn't give her an inch.

Some things are best not changed and need to be celebrated. Such is the talent of David Byrne. If it's the "same as it ever was" , then every kiwi deserves to see this gig. I full expect nothing less from this man.
