Kick off your experience of the stunning exhibition A Day in Pompeii with this lecture about one of New Zealand’s most dramatic volcanic events.
Almost without warning, Mt Tarawera exploded during the early hours of 10 June 1886. Dr Hamish Campbell explores what happened and why. He compares the Tarawera eruption with the Somma-Vesuvius one, which smothered Pompeii in 79 AD.
Dr Hamish Campbell is a Wellington-based research scientist specialising in New Zealand’s older rocks and fossils. He works for GNS Science and has been a subject expert for exhibitions at Te Papa and the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
