Taking the role of a 19th century botanical explorer, Colombian artist Alberto Baraya collects and catalogues artificial plants and botanical tattoos from some of the most fertile places on earth.

In his ongoing 'Herbarium of Artificial Plants' Baraya creates elaborate botanical displays. This exhibition features New Zealand additions to the 'Herbarium', collected during his ‘expedition’ in the North Island.

Merging colonial exploitation with contemporary consumerism, tourism and global exchange, Baraya’s taxonomies mimic accurate botanical classifications, exposing the arbitrariness of the scientific paradigm and exploring our consumption and use of nature.

Baraya will also present the new offsite project 'SilkFern', related to his 'Herbarium', in the celebrated Fernery at New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park.

Curated by Alejandra Rojas.
