Beyond the Image : The title is taken from an interview with Richard Serra, Scultpure October 2002. That most enduring art is not predicated on images. If art is predicated on the image you collect the image. Sometimes you can retain it, sometimes not. The art that endures and puts"fire in the belly" makes you go back for the fulfilment of an experience that is not commensurate with what you have retained. Therefore the experience always remains vital.

When paintings and sculpture react upon you in this way they are compelling. You are continually going back to them to experience more. Often art predicated on an image, results in closure once you have grasped the image. Looking at Pollock and Newman, their best works defy image retention. Experience is either evoked through line and process or through colour and plane.  “My generation ( Serra) was probably more influenced by Pollock and Newman than the generation that came after, which was more influenced by Johns and Warhol, namely image". This exhibition draws on these ideas and explores them in the works of the contributing artists including Darryn George, Laurence Aberhart, Ben Webb, Chris Charteris, Noel Ivanoff and Simon Kaan. Their art either defies image use or  goes beyond the defining image.
