11 December - 22 January

Dolls have been a part of our history for thousands of years. Often making memorable gifts or marking a special time in our lives they are loved, battered, given haircuts, hung upside down, played with and grow to have personalities of their own. Throughout history, dolls have had other uses - sometimes being perceived to have power, used to display the latest fashion, to hold night clothes and adorn a bed, or to describe folk tales.

This exhibition will display dolls from private collections including ones from the 1920s to 1950s and include contemporary interpretations of dolls as well. There will also be doll-themed works by local printmakers Toni Mosley, Natalie Couch and Gabrielle Belz.

Here is some information on some of the artists who will exhibiting within this exhibition:

1. Young Manukau dress designer Tinesha Russel will be presenting dolls dressed with modern Maori Fashion garments.

2. Sean Hurst, graduate of Manukau Institute of Technology, will be setting up a diorama of his work. He is well-known in the film-industry for his work in costumes on, for example Spartacus and most recently on Ice.

3. Vicky-Lee Hipora Stark is a contemporary Maori artist with a strong background in weaving being one of the forerunners in using traditional processes to create stunning contemporary sculptural form through raranga. Within the film industry she has worked on Underworld III: Rise of the Lycans, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and Madigan's Fantasia. Vicky's installation has been inspired by a small wooden "Maori" doll, used for French Knitting.
