Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more! When mezzo Helen Medlyn sings Noel Coward’s witty songs with the Vector Wellington Orchestra, expect some sizzle and sauce! Helen Medlyn’s sparkling way with a clever lyric is guaranteed to raise a laugh, and conductor Marc Taddei can match her with his own zany streak too.
Following a British Proms tradition that is 114 years old, the Last Night of the Proms is all about fun, good music and audience participation – not necessarily all at once. The original Proms aim was “to present the widest possible range of music, performed to the highest standards, to large audiences.” A typical Proms concert mixes an attractive new piece with a brace of undeniable classics, such as some gorgeous Handel arias, and a sprinkling of comfy-old-slippers numbers everyone loves, like Jerusalem. Proms concerts open with more serious numbers such as Borodin’s Polovtisan Dances, sung by the Orpheus Choir. Any listener should find that work familiar: countless stirring film scores have cadged shamelessly from its rousing choral fireworks.
Towards the end of the concert, the listeners get to unchain their own talents. Audience enthusiasm for the singalong numbers such as Land of Hope and Glory never wanes. And in the best Proms tradition, listeners young and old anticipate with glee the moment when they can join in a mass bombardment of streamers around the auditorium.
Reserve seating and cushion area available.
