Thursday 6th August is the 64th anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb, when 100,000 died. The Cats of Mirikitani is a 74 minute documentary depicting a man whose passion for painting, especially cats, helped him as a survivor of the bomb, an internment camp and 9/11. It won the Norwegian Peace Film Award and 13 film festival awards and brings home the effects such atrocities have, even on those who survive uninjured. It makes links between past and present wars, homelessness and racism, yet avoids gruesome scenes. Indeed, it’s a film of hope with a happy ending. It will on at 7.30pm at the Old School Arts Centre, Stewart St on 6th August – koha welcome.
