The name Frank Messenger might not be recognised at first glance, but the buildings he designed in New Plymouth sure are. These include the Devonport Flats, the Cenotaph and the St Aubyn Chambers, to name just a few.

The Messenger Connection is an exhibition of 19 architectural plans associated with Messenger. The plans are part of the Apex Architectural Plan Collection.

In 2008, thirty-four plans associated with Frank Messenger were deposited at Puke Ariki Museum in New Plymouth by Apex Consultants Limited after the company was bought by Duffill Watts Consulting Group (now CPG New Zealand Limited).

Most of the plans were drawn by partners in firms associated with Frank Messenger including the firms of Messenger, Griffiths & Taylor and Messenger, Taylor & Wolfe.

Included in the exhibition are the plans for the Nurses Home at Barrett Street Hospital, the Bonithon Avenue mineral baths and Dr Walker’s home on Brougham Street (now the Nice Hotel).

Messenger worked as an architect from 1893 to 1945 and designed or helped design a staggering 315 buildings and monuments in and around New Plymouth.
