Dick Frizzell
"The Gloves Are Off"
24 August - 7 October
Dick Frizzell's art practice has always been characterised by a masterly handling of paint and an endlessly inventive range of subject matter and styles. Witty parodies of modernist abstraction, faux-naive landscapes, and figurative still-life and comic book characters all combine to constitute his extensive oeuvre. He has a penchant for fondly remembered and well-worn clichés and icons of kiwiana. Frizzell has an ironic humour, baby-boomer nostalgia and an anti-traditionalist trajectory. The large oil paintings comprising Frizzell’s new work for this exhibition continue his penchant to mix up the categories of high and low art. The artist enjoys the repartee of poking fun at the intellectualisation of 'high art' and the existential angst inherent in much of contemporary art culture.
