The Jubilate Singers, Christchurch’s noted 24-voice chamber choir directed by Grant Hutchinson, presents Illumina, Music of Light. The programme comprises eleven centuries of magnificent choral music, including works by Thomas Tallis, Robert Whyte, Gustav Holst, John Rutter, David Hamilton and Eric Whitacre as well as ChristChurch Cathedral organ scholar, Jeremy Woodside.
Jeremy’s new composition, Surge Illuminare, was written for the Festival and is scored for soloist, choir and organ; it is evocative of the music of John Tavener.
The highlight will be the première of an exciting new choral work especially commissioned for the Festival by the Jubilate Singers from New Zealand icon Gareth Farr. His composition, Illumina, uses the text from two New Zealand poems: Soft leaf falls of Light by Apirana Taylor and Jenny Bornholdt’s Light and is written for soprano soloist, choir and percussion. Gareth Farr will attend the première to introduce his new work. The soprano soloist in both the Farr and the Woodside pieces will be Helen Charlton.
With the Cathedral artistically illuminated for the occasion, this concert promises to be a delight for the eyes as well as the ears. The concert is on at 8.00 pm on Saturday, 8 August at ChristChurch Cathedral (in the Square)
