The New Zealand Accordion Association is hosting the annual Coupe Mondiale World Accordion Championships and Festival from 25 August to 29 August 2009. The last time New Zealand hosted this prestigious event was in 1980.
These championships are a showcase for top international accordion performers and are run on International Music Competition Guidelines. Players will compete in various classes combining both serious music and entertainment categories. This will be a unique opportunity to see these players at the top of their game. New Zealanders will feature highly in this competition with competitors in all categories and there is real potential that a New Zealander may take out the top spot.
There will also be festival appearances by world-class accordion orchestras from Germany, USA, Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand composer, Gary Daverne will conduct the premiere of his work "Auckland March" which has been commissioned for this event and will be performed by the mass orchestra World Accordion Orchestra III.
The programme for Tuesday, 25 August is as follows:
Grand Opening Concert at 8pm featuring:
Auckland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gary Daverne with Guest Accordion Soloists: Tracey Collins, Stephanie Poole, Betty Jo Simon and Mary Tokarski;
New Zealand Accordion Orchestra conducted by Gary Daverne.
"Meet the Accordion Celebrities" Social Function at 10.30pm featuring:.
Accordion entertainment by Lionel Reekie and Tracey Collins;
