Still Life
ceramics by Ann Verdcourt
20 August – 9 September 2009
preview Wednesday 19 August from 6pm
Ann Verdcourt is one of New Zealand’s greatest sculptural ceramicists. She is a highly regarded senior practitioner whose Retrospective exhibition will be touring the country from April 2010 through Te Manawa gallery in Palmerston North. Born and trained in the United Kingdom, Ann’s work reflects the access she had to the works of the ‘Great Masters’. Portraits and objects from these influential artists often inspire a work or a series of works. Amedeo Modigliani and Henri Matisse are some of her favourite sources of inspiration. Her versions of these figures from painting history are combined with autobiographical elements, whether hats hinting at her early days as a milliner or toys she had as a child. This current series of Still Life’s show her fondness for the works of Giorgio Morandi. Interested in Morandi’s sensitivity to colour and composition, Verdcourt explores the construction and arrangement of objects further.
