Offenbach’s saucy comic operetta comes to Newmarket

The Opera Factory presents ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’ for a two week season in the heart of Newmarket from 5th to 15th August.

Based on the legendary myth but Offenbach has wrought a few changes poking fun at the world of classical mythology and parodying operatic styles. In whose arms does Eurydice die? For whom does Orpehus really grieve? And just what is Jupiter doing disguised as a fly? Mount Olympus echoes to the strain of La Marseillaise, and in Hades they dance the infernal gallop. In the end, Eurydice and Orpheus live happily ever after – but with whom?

Directed by Linda Kitchen with Music Director Jesse Martins the cast features Darren Pene Pati in the title role of Orpheus, Jason Te Mete as the debonair Pluto King of Hades, Tizane McEvoy or Kerry Scurr as a saucy Eurydice, Adam Thompson as Jupiter and Catherine Reaburn as Juno. A large cast of talented young singers bound over stylistic stage designs by John Eaglen and lighting designs by Philip Dexter.

Orpheus in the Underworld is sung in English and it’s catchy melodies and comedy will appeal to all ages. Performances are 7.30pm Wednesdays to Saturdays with a 2pm matinee on Saturday 8th August.

The Opera Factory theatre is situated at 7 Eden Street in the heart of Newmarket, just off Gillies Avenue or round the corner from Two Double Seven shopping centre. The theatre is two minutes walk from public car parking, bus and train links. For further information phone 09 921 7801 or www.operafactory.com
