“An Ideal Husband” is the fifth of sixth plays written by Oscar Wilde, revolves around blackmail and political corruption, and touches on the themes of public and private honour in the “today” of 1895. As the play opens, Sir Robert Chiltern and his wife, Lady Chiltern, are hosting a soiree that includes their friend, Lord Goring, and Sir Robert’s sister, Mabel Chiltern. Amongst the arrivals is Lady Markby, bringing with her a friend, Mrs Cheveley, who receives a distinctly frosty reception from Lady Chiltern – the two ladies have met before! However, Mrs Cheveley has come to talk with Sir Robert about nefarious dealings and double crossings, which could lead to irreparable damage to his standing in society and with his wife, who considers him “an ideal husband” …
