The exhibition celebrates the remarkable life of Makereti (also known as Maggie Papakura) – Whakarewarewa guide, performer and scholar who was one of New Zealand’s first international media celebrities. Daughter of an Arawa woman and an English soldier, Makereti became an adept ‘cultural go-between’. She pioneered what we now know as the Maori concert party, taking a large group to England in 1910. In 1912 she married Richard Staples-Browne and settled in Oxfordshire.

In 1924 Makereti enrolled at Oxford University – and died suddenly in 1930 just weeks before the completion of her thesis. Makereti defied the limited expectations for women and Maori of her generation. The exhibition has been mounted with generous assistance from the National Library Gallery, National Library of New Zealand.
