Although not as well known, Woollaston’s paintings of the USA, seven of which have been included in this show, are among Woollaston’s greatest achievements of landscape painting. In the early 1990s Woollaston’s continued to work and travel, often to the home of former United States ambassador to New Zealand, Anne Martindell. Now Woollaston had new landscapes to enthral and captivate his imagination. Holidaying with Anne he had ready access to the mountains around Trachus, the Grand Tetons in Wyoming and the Adirondacks north of New York. There were also the deserts of Santa Fe in New Mexico and Sun Valley in Idaho. It was the mountains, skies and deserts of these landscapes that provided the inspiration for these large oil paintings.
