Artist comment, Rua Pick: on his 24 artworks exhibited
This exhibition is a homage to Te Waka Aotea Roa o Nga Atua (The Great Waka of the Elemental Caretakers / The South Island of New Zealand).
Between the Taurapa (Stern post) and the Tauihu (Prow) the Hull has been filled with many ancient Waitaha stories. The Taonga selected for this exhibition speak of great journeys of brave travellers exploring and discovering, navigating by the stars above, listening and watching the children of Papatūānuku (Grandmother Earth) for guidance.
The shapes themselves reflect the natural forms of Tuputupu Whenua (Grandmother Nature). The stories of the Kai Purakau (Story Tellers) dance through these Pareora (Windows of life).
Homage is paid to the three Sacred Taniwha of the South Island - Huriawa, Tu Te Raki Hau Noa and Tu Tekapo, who keep the waka afloat. Great Waitaha ancestors such as Hotu Matua, Hotu Kiwa, Maui Potiki, Ngahuē, Rākaihautū, Rauone, Huaki, Te Wāri and the enigmatic Te Māwe are also honoured within these artworks. Waitaha were the openers of the way. This exhibition speaks of this process across time and space.
May the waka of the Atua
continue to ride high
upon peaceful waters
of Rongo Marae Roa.
Rua Pick
