Focus on Antarctica at the Otago Museum

Experience Antarctica’s wild, majestic and exhilarating beauty through the lens of the South Island’s own master landscape photographer when Andris Apse: Focus on a Frozen Land opens at the Otago Museum this weekend.

Andris Apse describes photography in Antarctica as “a serious challenge” to his working style. “Anywhere else in the world,” he explains, “I can calculate, explore and return to locations time and time again.” The breadth and magnificence of the resulting images, however, from seals to penguins, ice formations to wind-sculptured rocks, are true testament to Apse’s vision and technical skill.

Apse is already widely acclaimed for his ability to capture the wild perfection and rugged beauty of New Zealand landscapes. His Antarctic work adds a new dimension, and is sure to please those already familiar with his work as well as win him new admirers.

Visitors will be able to meet Apse for themselves next month at Apse on Ice. During this special evening opening of the exhibition, Apse will speak about his photographic practice and experience in Antarctica, as well as offering visitors a chance to ask him questions over a glass of wine.
