The tradition of performance is often only considered as a live act, however with the introduction of photography and video as forms of documentation or produced directly to be shown as the finished work itself, this idea is challenged. Gesture, the act, stagings and a sense of the performative come into play. A live performance invites overt audience participation and experience, where the audience’s response is a completing element. When the act is documented, or captured, and shown later the audience’s influence is removed and a barrier is created where the audience becomes passive. One then may consider what components define performance and its development, not only a medium but as a broader concept.
