Bruce Mason's classic New Zealand drama - "The Pohutukawa Tree" is Stagecraft Theatre's choice to help celebrate their 50th year and is in the hands of one of Wellingtons' most experienced directors and critics, Ewen Coleman.
Matriarch Aroha Mataira lives in Te Parenga with her children Queenie and Johnny, but a lifetime of Maori-tanga and Christianity cannot save her daughter from an unplanned pregnancy or her son from a drunken and violent outburst, the consequences of which none of them could have forseen.
Disgraced, Aroha is forced to choose between her religion , her connection with the land and her family . . . with devastating results.
Though the author died in 1982, many many New Zealanders will be familiar with his work or at least have heard of one of his more popular plays "Blood of the Lamb", "Awatea", "The Pohutukawa Tree" or "The End of the Golden Weather". He frequently explored the relationships between Maori and Pakeha as they changed, grew, struggled or came to a recognition of the sense of alienation that all people face when separated from whatever it is that they hold precious - and thus his work remains relevant still . . .
