Christian Lindberg’s achievements for the trombone can only be compared with those of Paganini for the violin or Liszt for the piano.
Having premiered over 300 works for the trombone (including more than 30 composed by himself), recorded over 70 solo CDs, and having an international solo competition created in his name in Valencia, Spain, he is today nothing less than a living legend.
The Millenium Hotels and Resorts Tour:
RACHMANINOV The Rock
WAGENSEIL Trombone Concerto
LINDBERG Helikon Wasp
TCHAIKOVSKY Le Voyevoda Symphonic Ballad
TCHAIKOVSKY Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture
HANNU LINTU Conductor
CHRISTIAN LINDBERG Trombone
Framed by the thrills of 19th century Russian fantasies and a symphonic-ballad – Rachmaninov’s The Rock plus the double-dose drama of Tchaikovsky’s melodious Romeo and Juliet and The Voyevoda – come two comparative rarities featuring solo trombone.
Wagenseil (1715-77) wrote his late-in-life, two contrasted movement concerto for a small bore alto trombone. Just the title of Christian Lindberg’s Helikon Wasp (2003) conjures images. This wasp sings and plays in a score that intrigues listeners with its virtuostic dancing, vocalising and moments of capricious whimsy.
