"Latcho Drom" (Safe Journey)
Winner of Special Grand Prix at Montreal Film Festival. Directed by Tony Gatliff
(E-mail your booking to: settlersfilmclub@xtra.co.nz)
Latcho Drom is a cinematic survey of Gypsy music from several countries. It is touching, sad and joyous. Most of the segments appear to be completely unstaged, unrehearsed. The music, ranging from the sensual flamenco music of the Spanish Gypsies, to the melancholy music of the Central European Gypsies, is exquisite. Latcho Drom (Safe Journey) transcends language and culture, spanning the four seasons as told through the musicians and dancers of India, Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France and Spain.
(PG) certificate
"Touching, sad and joyful . . . a remarkable glimpse at an ancient culture" - Channel 4 TV
The film takes the viewer on a journey west, from India to Spain, with stops along the way, to dramatize Romany's nomadic culture. This journey takes place over a year's time, from summer through autumn and winter to spring. Gatlif holds his camera on the elemental essentials of this life: water, the wheel, fire, beasts of burden and of sustenance, colourful clothes, jewellery, musical instruments, song, and dance. Throughout, via song and dance, young and old celebrate, embody, and teach the cultural values of family, love, separateness, and persecution.
"A stunning visual, emotional and musical treat . . . a must see film" - Steve Tanner 'Movie View'
