By Martin McDonagh
This production plays with the thin edge between comedy and cruelty. It explores the realm of the fairy tale in the play, the comic irony, as well as the brutality. The performance crackles with the tension of a who-done-it, while, in the playwright’s words, encouraging the audience to laugh and think. Laugh at the words and the situations while reflecting on the cruel nature of both.
But primarily this production invokes the wonder of a story well told. The ending is not happy but it should be one that inspires a feeling of wholeness, “in keeping with the spirit” of storytelling, to paraphrase the words of the playwright. The original fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm were brutal but they had this feeing that everyone got what they deserved more or less, and that a sense of justice prevailed. This is the same feeling the audience experiences at the end of The Pillowman.
