Volume will explore and challenge the position of the craft / object maker in New Zealand now. Presenters from both contemporary art and craft camps will come together and question the function, position and future of the crafted object in New Zealand.

Right now contemporary craft/object making is in good health and spirits – the perfect position from which to take stock and ask some of the big questions.

Who are the hottest young kiwi craft artists? Where does craft fit in the 21st Century? Is the handmade still relevant? What are public galleries offering object art? Where to from here in craft education? How do we compare nationally and internationally?

First 50 registrations get a free copy of the Raising Boys exhibition publication Upstarts – Knowledge and Change in Clay.

Note: HBMAG will be hosting an applied art/object curators forum on Friday 17th October, in advance of the symposium. For more information on this contact Lucy Hammonds. lhammonds@hbmag.co.nz
