For one night only the Festival is thrilled to welcome the Southern Opera Company on their debut visit to Dunedin with this Grand Opera masterpiece. Verdi’s Il trovatore has remained in the mainstream opera repertoire more because of its exceptionally beautiful music than its extraordinary plot.

Incredible tales of gypsies, love triangles, unrelenting revenge and burning babies are transcended by the soaring score and haunting melodies.

It is an opera which places enormous demands on the principal singers and requires four great singers to realise the full majesty of Verdi’s searing musical drama.

An internationally acclaimed cast directed by Elric Hooper, accompanied by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Australian maestro,Tom Woods, has been assembled to guarantee that the audience will be moved by this tortured tale of vengeance.

Il trovatore will be performed in Italian with English surtitles.
