The New Zealand debut of this outstanding troupe of male Spanish dancers and musicians is nothing short of a Festival coup. Audiences will be seduced by the magic of what happens on stage.
Hardly discernible in the semi-darkness, the black-clad dancers of Camut Band slowly emerge on stage. Moments later everything suddenly explodes in the most brilliant fireworks of breath-taking, ear-splitting, life-affirming dance and percussion.
Mixing a heady cocktail of tap, flamenco and African drumming, the group stomps on different-sized drums and in scratchy sand, but also on the rulebook. Backed by powerful instruments such as the Sengalese djembe and the Nigerian udu, building up compelling rhythms from tapping feet, clicking fingers and even raucously nonsensical conversations, they effortlessly transcend linguistic and cultural barriers in a whirlwind of dramatic energy, joyous spontaneity and sophisticated fun.
“The Camut Band revel in the Afro-Latin connection with a production which is elegant, powerful and sweatily sexy. An hour and a half flies by in a blur of feet and in the finale, I swear, the ground moves beneath their metal-shod boots. Fight for that ticket." - THE SUNDAY HERALD, UK
“This beautifully choreographed and brilliantly staged meld of Spanish dance and African percussion climaxes with something I have rarely seen at the Fringe, a roaring standing ovation.” - EDINBURGH FESTIVAL- THE INDEPENDENT (LONDON)
