Beverly and Lawrence have invited new neighbours Angela and Tony to drinks and nibbles. Also invited is Susan whose teenage daughter is throwing a party at which her mother is not welcome. The evening begins with good-will, clichés and small-talk but as the alcohol flows and the strain in Beverly and Lawrence's relationship is revealed a rising tension develops which finally snaps with a dramatic and emotional ending.
Abigail's Party was devised through improvisation by acclaimed film director Mike Leigh and was the first of his plays focusing on the desperately funny tragedies of working class life. Set in late 70's England Abigail's Party perfectly captures the aspirations and frustrations of suburban life and is just as relevant today as when it was first performed over 30 years ago.
Shoreside Theatre regulars Victoria van Raalte, Marty van Iersel and Stephen Jury are joined by new comers Rebekah Chambers and Rachel Plank to bring the 70's fashion and music and the awkward comedy of this classic drama to life on The PumpHouse stage.
