My favorite dancing experience occurred last year at the Jambalaya Music Festival in Rotorua. My partner and I are both passionate about Latin music and spent the whole weekend with huge grins on our faces and maracas on our tails. The highlight: when we first arrived we glanced at the festival’s program and read a description of the parade, an event where anyone could get dressed up, anyone could join. My partner, a fearless fanny-shaker immediately stated: “We’re joining the parade!” We ran out to the $2 store and collected an odd but vibrant assortment of colorful hair, goofy glasses, and bunches of fake flowers. With green feathers sprouting from his head and a tall tiara of roses sprouting from mine we were transformed into “Jambaloco” and “Jambalady.” Although we were certainly not the most well-trained, coordinated, or elaborately-decorated entrants in the parade, I doubt anyone had more fun dancing than we did, sandwiched between amazing samba groups, smiles permanently fixed on our faces. :D
