‘Kristallnacht’ or Night of Broken Glass refers to 9 November 1938 when organised anti-Jewish riots began in Germany and Austria. Vector Wellington Orchestra begins the world-wide commemorations of this significant event.
The concert opens with Brahms’ German Requiem, one of the greatest of all choral works. Written as a memorial to his mother, Brahms’ Requiem seeks to comfort the living as much as mourn the dead.
Boris Pigovat’s The Holocaust Requiem was written in remembrance of his grandparents and aunt – victims of the Babiy Yar massacre. Viola soloist Donald Maurice says “there are moments of such serenity that the tears well up for the sheer beauty of the music.”
Proceeds from this performance will be donated to the Wellington Holocaust Centre.
