Estonian composer Arvo Pärt claims that beauty exists in a single note. His brief Cantus, for strings and a bell, breathtakingly simple yet intensely moving, pays tribute to Britten, represented in turn by his Violin Concerto dating from the exile years in North America (1939-43). Shadows reflect ominous world events and personal conflicts also surface in a vivid score. Beethoven’s towering Eroica changed the course of the symphony forever, a monumental statement marking a stirring tribute to mankind.
