What the f*** is going on inside kids’ heads today?
Following its successful production of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, the University of Auckland's student-run Stage2 Productions is challenging itself with a contemporary American play about coming of age in the 21st Century – and having no idea what to do with your life.
Pulitzer Prize-nominated American writer, actor and social realist Eric Bogosian’s Suburbia is performed for the first time in New Zealand at the Maidment Theatre’s Musgrove Studio from 21–31 May.
A stark look at the youth of today, Suburbia is directed by long-time student actor Roderick D. Morgan. Seasoned Stage2 players Charles Louwrens, Yulie Great and Brie Glusco are joined by a raw cast of fresh new first-year talents making their debut on the University stage.
Set out the back of a local corner dairy, Suburbia offers a disturbing insight into the grim reality that faces many young people today. The play tells the story of five disillusioned and disorderly Gen-Yers, on the night an old friend – who has found rock star fame – returns to visit his former schoolmates. Soon, all of their worlds will be rocked, and even the dairy-owning Muslim immigrants will have a radical part to play.
