Tchaikovsky’s melodic power erupts in the Fifth Symphony, an exploration of fate leading to triumph in its finale. Autumnal poignancy in Elgar’s Cello Concerto (1918-19) possibly expresses grief for a generation squandered on the killing fields of Europe, or it could be a lament for Lieutenant Kenneth Munro, killed at the Somme, an intriguing tale linked to NZ. No such ambiguity in Lilburn’s Overture Aotearoa, quintessential NZ written in London for the 1940 New Zealand Centenary Matinee at His Majesty’s Theatre.
