This outstanding piece of contemporary NZ theatre, “ A night with Beau Tyler” is by far the most accessible piece of live theatre to come along in years.
The public already know “Beau Tyler”, the shameless parody of a well known self help guru that has been selling us Tip Tops Memphis Meltdown range in an endless series of TV commercials over the last few years. The Beau Tyler character is rivalled perhaps only by ASB’s Ira Goldstein as NZ’s most loved TV commercial persona.
The show is set in a real time self improvement seminar “ Yes lots of audience participation “ and somehow manages to weave thought provoking theatrical satire from the most comical parody of the self improvement industry.
Beau takes the audience with him on his own personal melt down to hollow core of his own empty personality then bounces back from rock bottom saved by the human technology of his own personal development system “ Feel the fear and fail anyway “ the audience can enjoy this show on so many levels of complexity it is truly “peoples theatre”.
The Beau Tyler character, fallen guru, rising phoenix-like was a perfect balance of pathos with self-love and ultimately explained why the genre he is subverting works . . . - Pulp Magazine
