This month guest speakers discuss whether animals have any rights at all, and where this idea has come from, introducing us to the likes of Descartes and Peter Singer.

Marianne Macdonald and Deirdre Sims will guide us through the concepts underpinning our attitudes and actions towards the animals we love being used variously as pets, food, clothing, entertainment and sport.

Marianne and Deirdre are SAFE’s school educators in Auckland. Deirdre Sims is involved with a wide variety of animal rights groups including SAFE and NZ Open Rescue and is currently studying animal behaviour and ethics at Unitec.

Marianne Macdonald has been involved in campaigning for animals for 20 years both in the UK and NZ. She has worked for organizations in including the National Anti-Vivisection Society, The Vegetarian Society and SAFE and is currently a member of SAFE’s National Executive Committee.
