Enjoy a magical evening of dew fairies and sandman, dark forests and witches, as we follow Hansel and Gretel along the overgrown path from childhood innocence to adult awareness.
Two children are sent to pick berries in the forest. As night falls, they lose their way and stumble across a beguiling candy house. The evil witch who resides there imprisons Hansel in a cage and fattens him up. But quick-thinking Gretel tricks the witch into her own oven and saves the day. The parents arrive, chastened and relieved. All is well, but the children and parents alike have learned a valuable lesson about the evil lurking in our midst.
This new production of Hansel and Gretel boasts an all New Zealand cast and creative team. Directed by the multi-talented Michael Hurst, who describes his interpretation as "fairytale opera with a kick".
Playing the roles of both Mother and Witch is acclaimed mezzo soprano Helen Medlyn. Two rising stars, soprano Ana James and mezzo-soprano Anna Pierard, play Gretel and Hansel respectively.
New Zealander Tecwyn Evans, who has worked with many of the great British opera companies and festivals over the past decade will conduct. With an ensemble of players from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
Sung in English.
Duration approximately 2 hours including interval.
