Twenty-two of New Zealand’s aspiring young opera singers converge on Wanganui in early January for the 14th annual New Zealand Opera School, ten days of intensive vocal, language, movement and acting training with opera professionals. Running in conjunction with NZ Opera School is Energy Direct NZ Wanganui Opera Week which provides opportunities for the public to observe the progression of the creative process. Public activities featuring the students include masterclasses; performances at local cafes and restaurants around Wanganui; a lunchtime concert at the Sarjeant Art Gallery; and a chapel service dedicated “To Music” in the Wanganui Collegiate Chapel. The culmination of NZ Opera School is a public concert, “Great Opera Moments”, where the students showcase the music studied over the duration of the School.
