Edmund Hillary Funeral

A great adventurer and humanitarian, Sir Edmund Hillary was the first person to climb the 8,848-metre summit of the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest.

He died on Friday January 11th in an Auckland hospital at the age of 88.

His body will lie in state at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell and the public will be able to watch the state funeral service on big screens in the Auckland Domain and Viaduct Basin.

Condolence books for people who wish to write a personal message for the Hillary family following the death of Sir Ed have been opened in Parliament and in the Auckland Town Hall.

The state funeral will also be broadcast live on TVNZ from 9:30am.

A huge amount of logistics work is going into the funeral planning, involving officials from the military, the department of Internal Affairs, and the police. Traffic management is likely to be an issue as it is expected a large number of people will turn up for the service on the day.

Sir Ed's funeral is likely to go from 11am - 12.30pm. Avoid travel at the top end of Parnell Road/St Stephens Ave from 9am to mid-afternoon. Detour signs will be posted.

Road Closures

4. Brighton Road – west side from St Stephens Road for approx 100m
5. Ayr Street – approximately 100m from Parnell Road
6. Cathedral Place – approximately 100m from Parnell Road
7. Domain roads: The Crescent, Auckland Domain – both sides from Domain Drive to Cenotaph Road; Wintergarden Road , Auckland Domain – from Football Road to the end; Cenotaph Road, Auckland Domain – from Maunsell Road Extension to the end including the Cenotaph Car park; Museum Circuit, Auckland Domain – west side from Cenotaph Road to the Museum; Football Road, Auckland Domain – from The Crescent to Grandstand Road South
