Celebrate Waitangi Day 2008 at the magnificent Okahu Bay Domain. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Waitemata Harbour, this is the first Waitangi Day Festival hosted by local tangata whenua (Ngati Whatua Orakei) in partnership with Auckland City Council.
Become a part of history in this first ever Waitangi Day Festival at Okahu Bay since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Okahu Bay was the original site of the arrival of Governor Hobson who was invited by Ngati Whatua chiefs to create the city of Auckland in 1841.
At 9am - EVERYBODY is welcome to be a part of the one of biggest traditional welcoming ceremonies (HAKA POWHIRI) at Okahu Bay since the Millennium Celebrations in 2000. There will be classic sailing yachts, waka and contemporary boats who will arrive at Okahu Bay to join in the traditional welcoming ceremony by the hosts- Ngati Whatua o Orakei.
Please arrive at 8:45am to ensure you get a park and also participate in the ceremony.
Bring the family to sample the beautiful hangi, seafood, and other traditional delicacies. The children can enjoy safe access to the BEACH, KIDS RIDES (motor bikes, bouncy castles, inflatable slides, tower drop etc), CHILDRENS STAGE and also the FARM ANIMALS or pick up some great Maori artwork, a tee-shirt and other gifts for yourself or friends.
Then, sit back on your blanket with your WHANAU and listen to the full musical line-up of HOUSE OF SHEM, ARDIJAH, CORNERSTONE ROOTS, 3 HOUSES DOWN, RUIA, END CUBE, JAMOA JAM, URBAN BEAT, BEN LUMMIS, TAISHA. Main Stage begins at 10:30am.
This is a safe, fun, family focused enjoyable day.
Parking will be on Bastion Point or Teachers Eastern Rugby Fields or catch a bus and bring your ticket to the event and be-in-to-win exciting prizes. Listen to FLAVA for regular updates and also win prizes.
Come along and celebrate NZ history in Tamaki Makau Rau-Auckland.
This is a ‘zero-waste’ event to protect our beautiful land and sea for futures generations. Please take home waste with you to dispose of properly at home. This event is ALCOHOL FREE and DRUG FREE to role model positive messages to the tamariki (children).
