Presented by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra

Christian Knapp - Conductor
Diedre Irons - Piano

The American dream has inspired composers for well over a century now. From Dvořák’s optimism and beauty in the “New World” symphony to Copland’s iconic
Fanfare for the Common Man, the ideals and landscape of the continent have fascinated generations.

It was George Gershwin, however, who created an authentic American sound with his brilliant combination of jazz and piano concerto – Rhapsody in Blue.

Under the baton of Christian Knapp and featuring pianist Diedre Irons, sit back and be entertained and inspired by the music from the new world.

Free pre-concert talk 7pm in stalls.

Programme

Copland Fanfare for the Common Man
Besser Hudson River Pieces
Gershwin Rhapsody In Blue
Dvorak Symphony No. 9 (From the New World)

This was a wonderful evening. Christian Knapp's comments on the works were very interesting and increased the richness of the experience. I loved learning about the music I was listening to. Diedre Irons was a joy to listen to and to watch as she was so engaged and so enjoying herself - at least that is how it seemed! I wondered how anyones fingers could fly so fast and land on all the right notes at all the right times! Of course the orchestra itself was wonderful and thanks so much for a marvellously rich and entertaining evening. The group I was with, some of whom have never been to an orchestral concert, was equally engaged and making plans to attend future concerts.
