Raising Boys is an exhibition which builds a family tree around the increasingly prominent contemporary ceramics movement.
As with any family, the world of ceramics has undergone significant generational change.
Younger artists run riot with the traditions of their forebears, yet the two generations remain inextricably linked through the process of sharing, teaching and collaborating which has been ongoing since the birth of New Zealand’s studio ceramics movement.
Looking closely at one particular branch of this family tree, Raising Boys brings together three of New Zealand’s leading contemporary potters with their close mentors and teachers.
Andy Kingston, Paul Maseyk and Martin Poppelwell are three artists who are challenging the perception of clay within New Zealand art.
Their predecessors, Ross Mitchell-Anyon and Richard Parker, are themselves key artists in the development of a local ceramics idiom. The exhibition draws all five artists into a family portrait, examining the interactions, conflicts and complexities of this microcosm of New Zealand art.
