Tear Down the Wall is a project started by a group of 9 to 11 year old kids from the Discovery 1 school in Christchurch.
They want to protest the large displays of tobacco products – called ‘Powerwalls’ – currently allowed in retail shops.
Tobacco advertising is illegal in New Zealand and the kids from Discovery think Powerwalls are an underhanded way to advertise cigarettes to kids, and therefore they should be banned.
On 20 August the Discovery school kids will stage their own media event. They will building a large wall in Cathedral Square to represent all the Powerwalls in NZ, and then ‘tear it down’ to reveal their own suggestions for what can replace the space currently used to advertise tobacco products.
Christchurch Central MP Tim Barnett will attend and give a speech. The public are invited and encouraged to come along and show support for the Discovery kids and their goal of getting tobacco product displays banned in NZ.
Wednesday 20 August at noon (Thursday 21 August as rain date).
