Nobanjo and Friends

Christchurch band "nobanjo" have been making music together for years, maintaining their status as New Zealand's best kept musical secret by gigging rarely and with little or no warning, and through regular changes of name and lineup. Currently numbering nine (when everyone turns up) this is definitely not your conventional Saturday night duo.

Their sound is hard to pin down or categorise, drawing as it does on the band members' diverse musical tastes. Well-crafted covers of folk, acoustic, bluegrass, and gospel music mix with classics by the likes of Dylan, Clapton, Lou Reed and Ben Harper, Kiwi music from the past and present, and the odd original number, to produce a set-list that always has another surprise around the corner.

Despite their numbers, "nobanjo" work to produce a clean, uncluttered sound, based around acoustic intruments (other than the banjo), great musicianship, and vocal harmonies to die for. Disarmingly humble despite their prodigious musical talents, this band could well be the complete package. A complete package of what, you ask? Well, you'll have to come along and judge for yourself.

And who knows, maybe the banjo will make a brief cameo after all . . .
