Haydn's Trumpet Concerto is partnered by the irrepressible HK Gruber's infectiously jaunty 3 MOB Pieces, a transcription in 1999 of earlier small ensemble pieces. The Guardian described them as an, engaging pastiche of bossa nova, Beatles and baroque. Two symphonies provide the counterbalance. Mozart's No 31 - written in 1778 for Paris - was such a success that the composer took himself off for an ice cream after its premiere! Schumann's Second - actually the third in order of composition - with its brass motto theme and ingenious thematic transformations is the epitome of early-Romantic expression.
