The Choreographic Showcase Series features new works, short films and slices of kiwiana set to titillate, excite and provoke audiences. Three showcases are on offer from the 30th of September through to the 9th of October at Western Spring’s TAPAC. They highlight the diligent work of New Zealand’s performers both as choreographers or dancers.

Choreographic Showcase Number One explores the confessions of an aspiring dancer defying the odds. Told through the eye of a lens this performance draws on various dance forms. Vicki Grimshaw’s winding journey to an ever-changing destination is explored in Confessions of a Dance Whore. Juliet Shelley takes the qualities of sentience, intimacy and pure physicality into her dancing of new solo piece, Sukinature, with sound composed by Olivia Bryant, and Liquid Lives, choreographed by Naressa Gamble, which interprets the movements of water, how it flows and swirls throughout its course in nature through dance.

Choreographic Showcase Number Two sees Zoe Watkins and Will Barling dance to Ann Dewey’s choreographed Paper Tiger, a presentation by Spinning Sun, with music by John Gibson. One of New Zealand’s most famous sons, Fred Dagg, will have his iconic songs featured in Camille Sweeney’s Not What I Do, with what is promised to be a performance tinged with aspects of Kiwiana. Finally, prominent video director Alyx Dunan will have her short film Pandoro screened as a finale of the night. Choreographed by Duncan also, the short film features Kilda Northcutt of Bipeds Productions - formerly a People’s Choice Best Dancer award winner and a regular performer at Bats Theatre.

Choreographic Showcase Number Three will provide a provocative final showcase, opening with Mareikura, an excerpt from a new dance theatre work entitled ‘Bloodearth Dark Ocean’, which was produced and directed by Tangata Whenua. Mareikura is a question of loyalty and survival, connecting to our visceral consciousness in sexuality, spirit and dreams. Emilia Rubio’s daily life is expressed with vital and subtle, melancholic and mysterious performing with There is a Place while tick, choreographed by Kaite Burton, sees her work embraced by live sound from Sally Nicholas and Josh Tilsley.
